Commissioned Lay PastorsPTCA welcomes its first Commissioned Lay Pastor
It was a joyous celebration. At his June 28, 2005, commissioning, participants laid hands on Joseph Kammel, who now serves as a Commissioned Lay Pastor for adult discipleship at Knox Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. "I think it [the CLP program] has tremendous potential in terms of empowering the lay leaders of the church," said Associate Executive Presbyter Deb DeMeester. "And a way that we can serve local congregations by encouraging and educating their lay leaders." A commissioned lay pastor (CLP) works in a focus area for a particular congregation for a specified time. The CLP can also serve on the PTCA Pulpit Supply list as a person who can fill a pulpit when a pastor is away. The Presbytery's Commissioned Lay Pastors Committee works with the Committee on Ministry and the Church Development Team to determine if CLP leadership is appropriate for a congregation's ministry needs. It helps empower congregational renewal and can provide leadership for growing racial ethnic groups, DeMeester said. The General Assembly rewrote the guidelines for Certified Lay Preachers to create the CLPs position, which includes more than preaching: such as performing the sacraments, marriages, and moderating the session. The PC (U.S.A.) has online resources about CLPs and Why and When to use a CLP. For more information, please contact Sarai Beck at the Presbytery
