"Decently and In Order"

budget meetingThe Book of Order states "the presbytery is responsible for the mission and government of the church throughout its geographical district."   The work of the Presbytery is handled by Committees, Work Groups and Task Forces, that do such things as ordaining and installing ministers, providing resources to local congregations, establishing new congregations and promoting racial and social justice.

The Committee on Ministry, Committee on Preparation for Ministry, Committee on Representation, Permanent Judicial Commission, and Nominating Committee carry out their responsibilities as outlined in the Book of Order [constitution], the bylaws of the Presbytery, and in their respective policies. The Bills and Overture Committee, Sexual Misconduct Response Committee, Church Development Team, Commissioned Lay Pastor Committee, and Self-Development of People Committee function and report as outlined in the bylaws of the Presbytery and their respective policies.

As individuals and sessions are led to further the mission of the Church (G-3.000), they receive encouragement, support, and/or resources of the presbytery through its work groups. Work groups each have their own mission statement and are responsible for the approval and oversight of appropriate task forces.

Any member of the Presbytery may form a task force to pursue a single purpose. Submit task force applications to an appropriate work group or committee. A task force includes people from at least two churches. A task force may exist for up to ONE YEAR and must submit an annual report; after submitting an annual report, a task force may again apply for one year.

COM: Steward of Pastoral Relationships

The Committee on Ministry (COM) is the pastor, counselor, coach and mediator. As such, COM's focus is on the relationships within Presbytery's congregations and between congregations and the Presbytery. The committee's role is similar to the role of a parish pastor who advises, counsels, even mediates between contending parties, such as seeking to help disagreeing spouses identify and repair trouble spots in their relationship.

Pastors often counsel with parents and adolescent children to build their relationship and heal the wounds between them. Pastors are often asked to intervene in the relationship between brothers and sisters. Pastors of congregations often serve as adviser, counselor, coach and mediator in order that the variety of relationships within the parish can be healthy and vibrant. The COM serves congregations and ministers in the same manner. The ministry of COM is to assist in building healthy relationships with ministers, congregations and the Presbytery.
