Federal Confusion Puts People with Disabilities at Risk — Here Are Resources That Can Help

The current confusion in federal policies is harming people with disabilities. During the shutdown, federal resources are less available than usual; and even when federal services are back to work, there will be problems due to lack of funding for programs, and lower staffing because many federal employees retired or resigned. When Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Accessibility (DEIA) programs are cancelled at the federal level, the rights of people with disabilities are restricted. Individual agencies such as the Veterans Administration, the Department of Education, and the Social Security Administration were already understaffed before budget cuts hit them hard in the last year. State programs are still in effect in many cases.
